(English) The AD OPT Advantage

AD OPT is the leading provider of crew planning optimization solutions for the airline industry. See how we can help you streamline operations and improve crew quality of life.

(English) Kronos® and CIRCADIAN® Offer Fatigue Management Tool to Airlines

CHELMSFORD, Mass. and MONTREAL, Oct. 27, 2010 — Kronos® Incorporated today announced that the Kronos AD OPT division has formed a relationship with CIRCADIAN® which allows  Kronos to offer a state-of-the-art fatigue and alertness module fully integrated with its market-leading airline crew planning, management, and optimization solutions.

News Facts

  • The airline industry is undergoing a fundamental shift in the way it applies work limits and rest requirements. Until now, those were defined using prescriptive rules based on the industry’s Flight Time Limitations (FTL), which are requirements that determine the maximum permissible duty periods, flight duty periods, and minimum rest periods for crew members. The industry is now moving toward fatigue risk management-based regulations, which prevent fatigue risks by using physiological models rather than defining hard limits on work and rest.
  • The governing agencies that establish prescriptive rules for airlines are now allowing FTL exemptions based on fatigue risk management systems. Agencies that have already permitted this type of exemptions include the Australia Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZ-CAA).
  • The need for fatigue risk management systems also accelerated in the U.S. with President Obama signing the H.R. 5900, the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Extension Act into law on August 1, 2010. This mandates all commercial air carriers to develop a FAA-acceptable Fatigue Risk Management Plan by October 31, 2010.
  • Kronos creates automated, optimized schedules for cabin and cockpit crewmembers, taking into consideration the organization’s operational objectives. A seamless integration with CIRCADIAN’s scientifically validated alertness simulator tool will enable Kronos to send the schedules to CIRCADIAN for fatigue risk evaluation in real-time.
  • CIRCADIAN’s Alertness Simulator will conduct root cause analysis and investigation of fatigue. The end-user will be able to view the data displayed on the Kronos application without having to switch systems. This will enable crew planners to determine acceptable levels of the crew’s fatigue and develop schedules that will further enhance the safety of passengers.

Supporting Quotes

(English) Mesaba Airlines Extends its Use of Altitude PBS™ to Improve Operational Efficiency and Maximize Crew Satisfaction

Optimal crew scheduling process helps regional airline stay competitive
Montreal, Canada, May 6, 2008 — Mesaba Airlines, a pioneer in adopting technology to improve operational efficiency, crew satisfaction, and passenger service is enhancing the use of its current crew planning system from Kronos® Incorporated to effectively manage the schedules of its pilots.

In addition to utilizing Altitude Pairing™ to develop optimal crew pairings, Mesaba Airlines’ flight attendant group is a long-time user of Altitude PBS™ (Preferential Bidding System), an automated and optimized crew scheduling  software solution pioneered by the AD OPT division of Kronos.

The airline has experienced enhanced crew satisfaction and improved operational efficiency through the use of Altitude PBS, and is now extending the use of the software to create pilot schedules.
“Altitude PBS has helped our planners do their jobs more effectively and strategically,” said Eric Workman, director of flight operations administration at Mesaba.

“The trust and solid working relationship we have with Kronos’ AD OPT Division made them a logical choice for Mesaba in adding our pilot group to Altitude PBS. Now, with the Kronos Altitude PBS system, all our crewmembers will have increased flexibility in creating their schedules while Mesaba can utilize the efficiencies of the system. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Kronos as it helps us meet our strategic planning needs.”

Optimizing schedule planning while maximizing crewmember satisfaction
Competing requirements of crew scheduling make it a complicated and time-consuming task. With Altitude PBS, Mesaba Airlines can develop schedules that satisfy both crewmembers and management by taking into consideration crewmember preferences, company rules, union regulations, and cost constraints. With crewmember satisfaction being a top priority for Mesaba Airlines, Altitude PBS enables its cabin and cockpit crewmembers to express their preferences through various bid options via a user-friendly interface and remote accessibility.

Enabling strategic decision-making
Long-term, strategic decision-making is fundamental to organizational success, especially when in growth mode. With the comprehensive Kronos solution, Mesaba’s planners are able to forecast effectively by analyzing different scenarios and reacting promptly and subsequently can focus more on planning for the future. This propels strategic and better-informed decisions.
“We are very pleased to extend our long-standing relationship with Mesaba and are happy to provide them with our ongoing support as the airline evolves and expands,” said Tom Ivaskiv, vice president and general manager of Kronos’ AD OPT Division. “Complex and growthminded airlines need to strengthen their strategic planning, and our goal is to assist them with all their crew planning, management, and optimization needs through our comprehensive crew management solutions and consulting services that can help them reach their business objectives more efficiently.”

(English) Air Transat Relies on AD OPT for Optimized Pairings and Preferential Bidding Solutions

Airlines with complex operations can no longer rely on software solutions that simply automate planning processes. While the number of aircraft is a factor, complexity can also be measured by how many aircraft and routes the airline operates, the rules and regulations they must abide by, and specialized factors such as language requirements. With so […]

(English) Air Canada Selects Altitude MPP™ from Kronos®

CHELMSFORD, Mass. and Montreal, March 24, 2008 — In an effort to strategically plan cost-effective and qualified crew manpower levels, Air Canada Flight Operations has selected Altitude MPP™ (Manpower Planning) from Kronos® Incorporated. This new implementation complements the airline’s use of Altitude PBS™ (Preferential Bidding System), which automates and optimizes the crew scheduling process for the pilot group. The combined solution from Kronos enables more efficient use of resource allocation by enhancing planning capabilities, employee satisfaction, and cost efficiencies.

“All airlines are faced with the challenge of improving their operational efficiency and satisfying crewmember quality of life, while reducing costs,” said Tom Ivaskiv, vice president and general manager of Kronos’ AD OPT Division. “With many successful Altitude MPP implementations, our experience in manpower planning has proven that airlines require automated and optimized solutions that can establish and maintain staffing requirements, manage crewmember career progression, and effectively allocate training awards.”

Engaging solution for management and crewmembers

Kronos’ Altitude MPP provides planners with enhanced manpower planning decision-making capabilities. Planners can seamlessly and optimally manage the entire manpower planning spectrum from one central environment. As a result, airlines benefit from an improved planning process that dramatically reduces the tedious and lengthy data collection process. The standard product also has an option which allows crewmembers to participate in the scheduling process by submitting their bids for transition between categories and their preferred training dates.

“With all the challenges faced in today’s global airline industry, the ability to strategically plan, manage, and foresee both short- and long-term manpower planning requirements has never been more important,” said Captain David Legge, vice president, flight operations at Air Canada. “Air Canada’s planners and senior management expect to benefit from the solution’s enhanced manpower planning decision-making capabilities. The ability to manage risks and uncertainties through Altitude MPP’s ‘what-if scenarios’ should provide us with the tools to determine the potential impact on the equipment bid and on training costs.”

Powerful optimization technology and consulting approach key for low-cost carrier

CHELMSFORD, Mass. and MONTREAL, Jan. 21, 2008 — Europe’s leading low-cost carrier, easyJet, has selected the Altitude Pairing™ solution from Kronos® Incorporated to improve its current crew planning processes. Altitude Pairing, developed by the AD OPT Division within Kronos, will provide easyJet planners and management with tools to understand the entire planning process in an effort to build cost-effective and operations-friendly pairings, while respecting company rules and regulations.

“In support of our year-over-year network growth, and to achieve economies of scale, we required a more sophisticated solution to assist in the management of our crew costs,” said Cor Vrieswijk, operations director at easyJet. “Our overarching objective is to improve the planning process. We expect our crew planning department to greatly benefit from Altitude Pairing’s ability to support extended ‘what-if’ capabilities by providing our planners the ability to explore new and alternate scenarios.”

With a need for optimization technology to manage a growing number of crewmembers, Altitude Pairing will automate and simplify the planning process, providing easyJet the ability to make better decisions through greater insight.
“As a result of an ongoing consulting relationship, a successful proof of concept, and a stringent procurement process, Kronos was able to demonstrate the extended value of its optimized pairing solution,” added Vrieswijk. “Kronos’ tailored consulting approach was a key factor in our decision.”
With the automated and optimized development of its crew pairings, easyJet will benefit from Altitude Pairing’s ability to assist planners in performing daily tasks while also improving both short- and long-term planning capabilities.

“We are very pleased to include the fourth-largest intra-European airline amongst the numerous international airlines that manage pairings with the Altitude Pairing solution,” said Tom Ivaskiv, vice president and general manager of Kronos’ AD OPT Division. “Our goal is to assist large, mid-size, and growth-minded airlines across the globe with their complex crew planning needs. easyJet’s confidence in Kronos further demonstrates our ability to meet the unique challenges of low-cost carriers.”

(English) Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Selects Kronos(R)

CHELMSFORD, Mass. and MONTREAL–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 5, 2007–Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAWW) has selected the Altitude Pairing(TM) solution from Kronos(R) Incorporated (Nasdaq: KRON) to provide crew planning optimization for its subsidiary airlines, Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo. The Altitude Pairing airline crew management solution is designed to make the most efficient use of an airline’s crewmember and equipment resources. The result is enhanced operational efficiency for the airline and an improved ability to meet its customers’ short-term shipment requests.

“The dynamic, opportunistic nature of our business requires a crew optimization system that can consider a multitude of cost factors, yet still provide fast and efficient solutions,” said Richard Rolland, senior director of crew scheduling for Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo. “The Kronos solution meets both of these objectives, as it is geared toward delivering customized solutions for the specific needs of aviation customers.”

Determine optimal pairings in the shortest time possible

Kronos’ Altitude Pairing solution converts a flight schedule into pairings, or trips. The planned pairings drive maximum efficiency and cost savings into a constantly changing schedule. The solution provides a dynamic and flexible system for building the least costly and most effective crew pairings. As a result, an airline can react to changes and re-optimize schedules with maximum efficiency.

Altitude Pairing also enables an airline to make decisions based on the analysis of “what if” scenarios. For example, with Altitude Pairing, both Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo will be able to evaluate the immediate cost impact of making changes to schedules to accommodate customer requests, and the down-line impact of those changes. Another key feature enables each cargo company to build scenarios using snapshots of data and assessing the situation at hand for better forecasting and in-depth analysis.

Delivering custom solutions for specific needs

Kronos is unique in its development of a custom Altitude Pairing Repair Module, which makes the best use of crewmembers’ time, based on the specific needs of its customers’ airline and regulatory requirements.

“Kronos’ Altitude Pairing solution helps airlines build efficiencies into their business which translates into immediate operational benefits,” said Tom Ivaskiv, vice president and general manager of Kronos’ Altitude Division. “And our tool chest of solutions allows us to take various elements and create a solution that meets the needs of each airline. We look forward to helping Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo build more efficiency into daily and long-term planning capabilities.”

Kronos made this announcement from the Kronos Altitude customer conference, taking place this week in Montreal, Canada, where Atlas Air’s Richard Rolland will be a guest presenter.
